The Human Resource Development
Award recognizes Brewster Place for the Health Support Specialist
Registered Apprenticeship Program that Brewster Place developed in
conjunction with the Kansas Department of Labor. The program provides the
opportunity for new and current employees to pursue a career ladder to
become universal workers or “Kaizen,” as the position is called at Brewster
Place. The award was one of seven given to member facilities in Kansas for
progress in the national Quality First initiative.
The AAHSA Quality
First Initiative
Brewster Place is a
member of the Kansas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (KAHSA)
and the national organization, the American Association of Homes and
Services for the Aging (AAHSA). The national association represents 5,600
not-for-profit nursing homes, continuing care retirement communities,
assisted living and senior housing facilities.
AAHSA believes that
the fundamental problem that its members face, along with the entire field
of aging services, is that “the public lacks confidence in what we do
because of concerns about the quality of care rendered by some providers.
This situation has evolved over a decade or two and has resulted in a
punitive regulatory and litigation environment, a rationing of funds to
support our programs, and a public whose expectations are low.”
At its recent annual meeting in Baltimore, member representatives endorsed a
new initiative aimed at achieving excellence in aging services and
establishing public trust. The plan is called "Quality First: A Covenant
to Achieve Healthy, Affordable, and Ethical Aging Services."
